I know some lonely Houses off the Road
A Robberâd like the look ofâ
Wooden barred,
And Windows hanging low,
Inviting toâ
A Portico,
Where two could creepâ
Oneâhand the Toolsâ
The other peepâ
To make sure Allâs Asleepâ
Old fashioned eyesâ
Not easy to surprise!
How orderly the Kitchenâd look, by night,
With just a Clockâ
But they could gag the Tickâ
And Mice wonât barkâ
And so the Wallsâdonât tellâ
Noneâwillâ
A pair of Spectacles ajar just stirâ
An Almanacâs awareâ
Was it the Matâwinked,
Or a Nervous Star?
The Moonâslides down the stair,
To see whoâs there!
Thereâs plunderâwhereâ
Tankard, or Spoonâ
Earringâor Stoneâ
A WatchâSome Ancient Brooch
To match the Grandmamaâ
Staid sleepingâthereâ
Dayârattlesâtoo
Stealthâsâslowâ
The Sun has got as far
As the third Sycamoreâ
Screams Chanticleer
âWhoâs thereâ?
And EchoesâTrains away,
SneerââWhereâ!
While the old Couple, just astir,
Fancy the Sunriseâleft the door ajar!
