The Horse Casts a Shoe

The horse casts a shoe
edged cobbles are speaking
the journey ends in a wood
metal remains.

On the path
light catches two women upon a trail
heat rises like mist from the skin
unsaddled
the sacred and different
stretches to muscled limit
two women tremble
the spotty light trembles
limbs of hemlock weaving a shelter
above us
I tremble your season
unshod against mine.

We enter a landscape
seize likeness lie down together
a horseshoe's clatter still ringing
our bodies bridged across terror
our names
a crostic for touch.
